WHY DO PARROTS EAT CLAY?

This is a very good question we want to investigate today.

First, this phenomenon can only be seen in the western part of the Amazon basin. They come in flocks of hundreds of parrots, parakeets and macaws to exposed river areas every day to eat clay and drink mineral rich water. But why?

There are various reasons. The most important is, that parrots eat a variety of foods including seeds, nuts, fruits, palm fruits, leaves, flowers, and stems, depending on the seasonal availability. Most of these foods eaten in the wild contain toxic or caustic substances. The clay, which is rich in minerals like potassium, magnesium, cobalamin and the most important – sodium, helps them to neutralize and digest these toxins.
